I wish I were still working at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, so that I could stop working there, along with 9,000 other faculty/staff, and walk the picket line with them. 94% of them voted to authorize a strike last month, and yesterday they went out, under the resourceful leadership of, among others, Donna Murch my colleague in the History department. Instead, I took a walk in Central Park, in solitary solidarity, if there is such a thing. That's the shadow of my present self, the retired one, at the south end of the lagoon that feeds into the Grotto near the Harlem Meer.
